A Slava day in the heart of Nice, one I will remember for a long time

Sometimes, the most beautiful moments during our travels are the ones we never planned. They happen completely by chance, while we are exploring unfamiliar streets, usually focused on something else entirely…

That is exactly how my visit to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Nice turned into something truly special – an encounter with Orthodox traditions, spirituality, and the warmth of people brought together by their shared faith.

During my visit to Nice this spring, visiting this beautiful church was definitely on my itinerary. I had come to see one of the most famous Orthodox places of worship outside Russia.

Built as an imperial foundation in the traditional Russian architectural style, the cathedral was inspired by Saint Basil’s Cathedral on Moscow’s Red Square. I wanted to admire this unusual building up close, with its colourful domes and magnificent architecture reminiscent of Orthodox churches in Russia.

However, I soon realised that something special was happening inside the cathedral. Worshippers were gathering, there was a festive atmosphere, and the space was filled with prayers and quiet conversations. Quite unexpectedly, I found myself in the middle of a Slava celebration – a traditional Orthodox family patron saint’s day.

The customs were not very different from our own. The atmosphere inside the church was solemn and festive. The scent of incense and the choir, whose singing I will never forget, created a feeling of peace and serenity. Watching the people gathered there, I realised that a church is more than just a place of worship. It is a place where people preserve their traditions, find a sense of closeness, and feel that they belong.

I felt as though I was witnessing something sincere and meaningful, yet wonderfully familiar.

The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas (Cathédrale Saint-Nicolas de Nice) was built in the early 20th century, at a time when Nice was a favourite destination for Russian aristocrats and members of the imperial family.

It is one of the most significant examples of Russian Orthodox religious architecture in Western Europe. Its appearance is almost surprising to visitors: instead of the typical French architectural style, they are greeted by the distinctive domes of Russian churches, elaborate ornaments, and a richly decorated façade.

The cathedral features five distinctive blue and gold onion-shaped domes, symbolising Jesus Christ and the four Evangelists, while the central dome reaches a height of 23 metres.

The interior is equally impressive. Every detail, from the icons to the iconostasis, reflects the rich heritage of Russian Orthodox art.

A visit to the cathedral can be a wonderful addition to your sightseeing itinerary, particularly if you want to discover a different, lesser-known side of Nice.

How to Get to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral

The cathedral is located at Avenue Nicolas II, 06000 Nice, France, in an area not far from Nice-Ville railway station.

You can reach it on foot from the wider city centre, by public transport, or by taxi. If you arrive by train, visiting the cathedral can easily be included in a day of sightseeing in Nice.

Before your visit, check the current opening hours, as access to the interior may depend on religious services and the cathedral’s visiting arrangements. Please remember to respect the religious nature of the place.

Dress appropriately for a place of worship and be considerate if a religious service is taking place. If you enjoy photography, the exterior offers some wonderful photo opportunities, especially when natural daylight brings out the colours of the domes and the architectural details.

What Else to See in Nice?

You can easily combine your visit to the Russian Orthodox Cathedral with some of Nice’s other attractions:

  • Masséna Museum (Musée Masséna) – one of the best-known museums in Nice. I have written about it in more detail here.
  • A panoramic viewpoint – offering spectacular views over the city. You can read more about it here.

This way, you can combine cultural tourism, history, architecture, and the pleasure of the Mediterranean atmosphere all in one day.

The cathedral and its surrounding park form a little green oasis in the heart of Nice. The church is extremely popular, welcoming more than 85,000 visitors every year. The building has recently undergone a complete renovation, allowing visitors to experience it in all its splendour.

After the liturgy, we were welcomed with a wonderful traditional Slava feast.

Right in the heart of Nice, I had the opportunity to taste some well-known Russian specialities.

Along with the delicious food generously served by the ladies who had prepared everything, I also met a few fellow Serbians living in Nice, which made the day even more special.

None of this had been part of my original plans, but I returned to my hotel with my heart and mind full of wonderful impressions.

If you are visiting Nice for the first time, this remarkable landmark definitely deserves a place on your list of must-see attractions.
