Being able to see the city from a bird’s eye view is a phenomenal experience. If I have the chans, I never miss it…
There are two reasons for that. The first one is purely touristic, because I can see the true size of the city, see some attractions from a different angle, etc. The second reason is functional because I always assume that these modern buildings are also wheelchair accessible.
Over the years I have come to realize that this second reason is not entirely true.
So, for example, Žižkov’s tower, which was built in the early 90s, does not provide the opportunity to enter the building with dignity. If you are a person in a wheelchair, you have to overcome one downhill, and on the way back uphill to be able to enter the tower through the garage and some side corridors.
I am writing this so that those in wheelchairs are not surprised, and I am, as always, overjoyed that there is this second possibility for entry.
About the tower
Although Prague is a city with a “thousand towers”, it cannot be said that there are many tall buildings. That is why it is not surprising that the Žižkov Tower with its height of 216 m is the tallest building in the city.
You can easily reach Žiškov because it can be seen from all parts of the city. 2 hours is enough for your visit.
When it was built between 1985 and 1992, it was not well received by the local population.
It was considered the ugliest building in the world. But they also hated the Eiffel Tower, and now the panorama of Paris cannot be imagined without it.
Today, this tower is one of the must-see attractions in Prague.
In an attempt to refine this building, crawling babies were added to the pillars. This is the work of the famous Czech artist David Černy, whose sculptures can be found all over Prague.
From a distance, these babies look tiny, but in fact each of them is 3.5 m in size and weighs about 200 kg. Instead of a face, the babies have a barcode, a symbolic critique of today’s consumer society.
The tower was named after the district in which it is located.
Žižkov’s tower is built on three pillars, which carry nine metal capsules of different purposes.
The main function of the Žižkov Tower is to carry the TV antenna. But it also offers some other content.
With the ultra-fast elevator, you can climb to various attractions on the tower.
The restaurant is at a height of 66 m. The hotel, which consists of one room, is at the 70 meter and is mostly used by newlyweds.
The viewpoint is at a height of 93 m and offers the best view of the city.
If the weather is clear, they say that the view can extend up to 100 km around.
There are bubble chairs here, which you can enjoy indefinitely.
You can also use these binoculars for a better view.
Comparison tables, who is bigger and who is the biggest. This is how all doubts are resolved.
Žižkov Tower offers a 360-degree view of the city.
I like to observe the attractions, which I have yet to visit as well as those I have already been to.
It is a good idea to climb the tower before visiting the city so that you can orient yourself around Prague more easily.
Sometimes I amuse myself by thinking how windows are washed here.
Arm yourself with a good camera and enjoy. A visit to Žižkov Tower is worthwhile if you time it right. Otherwise, you may find yourself in a fog that hides everything.
You don’t need to buy a ticket in advance because it’s not very crowded.
If you are a lover of romance, you can also visit it at night. Opening hours here.
Žižkov Tower rightfully belongs to the list of the most important tourist attractions in Prague. I wrote about that list here.
Conclusion
Although the entrance to the tower is a demanding operation for people in wheelchairs, I highly recommend that you make the effort because it is worth the time. Choose the right moment and enjoy your visit.
Have you visited the Žižkov Tower?
Did I miss something?
Traveled and enjoyed,
